COUNCIL ASKS WOREE RESIDENTS TO ‘ADOPT A PARK’
The successful Adopt-a-Park program has been expanded to include Jeff Pezzutti Park in Woree. The program is aimed at reducing the incidents of vandalism and graffiti in Council parks, by increasing community pride and developing a sense of ownership among residents.
Adopt-a-Park encourages local people, clubs and businesses to “ADOPT” their local park, be more pro-active in using these parks and to report vandalism – as soon as it appears. One bonus is that the program can pay for itself. This is because involving community groups (at minimal cost), leads to a reduction in the cost of removing graffiti, as well as a reduction in maintenance costs, due to a reduction of vandalism.
Council is committed to promoting ‘health, safety and community development’. When people in a neighbourhood develop a sense of community ownership of their facilities, they are more likely to report vandalism to Council or report other matters to the Police (who are very supportive of the program as well as is Neighbourhood Watch). This builds networks between residents and two important agencies that can also be valuable in other areas of community life.
If you are interested in becoming an ‘adopter’ of Jeff Pezzutti Park, or any other South Cairns park, please contact Rob Pyne or Council’s Communications Officer on 40443044 email feedback@cairns.qld.gov.au
