Bridge over Gordon Creek in Woree

After requesting a bridge over Gordon Creek (where the Girralong Street pathway meets Jeff Pezzutti Park) CRC staff agreed to relocate a cement bridge from Gordonvale.

Thank you to Council staff for getting the bridge in before the wet season. The concreting work is first class and the only evidence it is not an all-new constriction is the rusted railings. New railing are at the manufacturers now and will go up in January. Staff did put up orange hazard tape, but kids have pulled it down.

When the railing goes up it will look as good as new and youngsters traveling to school will no longer get their feet wet.

THERESA CLOSE RESIDENTS CONTINUE TRADITION

From 2009: The nightly procession of vehicles to inspect the Christmas decorations on display by homeowners in Theresa Close has become an annual event. The Bayview Heights street comes alive in the weeks before Christmas, with one resident even dressing up as Santa every night and welcoming visitors. There were also lights in other parts of Bayview Heights and also Woree, Mt Sheridan, White Rock and Bentley Park.

As a long term resident of the Southern Suburbs with a young family, I found time every year, in the week or so before Christmas to check lout the fantastic lights in Teresa Close.

A letter in today’s Cairns Post shows the tradition is set to continue. So consider taking you family and having a look (while showing courtesy to residents and others who are on the road to enjoy the spectacle).
Cr. Rob Pyne.

‘DECEMBER has arrived and with it the annual tradition of dedicated householders putting up Christmas lights for the enjoyment of others.

Theresa Close at Woree is often nicknamed the Christmas St and some houses will be turning on their lights this weekend.
Many people have been working hard to complete their lighting.
Sadly, there are some viewers who are full of complaints, ones who travel around the suburbs late at night and wonder why the displays are off, another last weekend shouted out “Turn your b… lights on”.
The spirit of Christmas is alive in some but sadly lacking in others.
While viewing the lights this year think behind the twinkling displays and consider the hard work and often emotional turmoil in other’s lives as well as your own. Fran Clayton, Woree.’

Jasper Street Pedestrian Refuge for Woree, Bayview Heights Residents.

Early in 2009 a crossing was requested for Jasper Street (at the intersection with Toogood Road) in Woree. Many children cross the street on the way to and from school as do parents with toddlers attending Bayview Kindy.

The street did not meet the technical requirements for traffic calming or a zebra crossing, so instead a ‘traffic refuge’ has been placed at the end of the street, where pedestrians can see any traffic that may be coming from Toogood Road.

The refuge will also stop cars from turning into Jasper at speed and drifting onto the wrong side of the road.

KAMBARA CALMING

During 2009 a number of residents raised concerns about the safety of leaving their driveway, for fear of unsighted traffic speeding over the top of the hill in Kambara Street.

Following community engagement with surrounding residents two speed cushions were introduced.

It is always a shame to have to introduce measures like this to try to stop the small percentage of motorists who do the wrong thing, but with the increased numbers now using this street, something needed to be done.
