WHITE ROCK SEWERAGE MILLION DOLLAR UPGRADE

Over a million dollars has been spent on sewerage upgrades in White Rock over the  last 3 years.

Work is well underway on the $335k Skull Road/Kowinka Street Sewer Extension.

This work comes on top of the new sewerage infrastructure that was put underground in south White Rock last year.

From: April 2010

One of the last un-sewered sections of White Rock will now get sewerage thanks to a $762 987.00 allocation from Council at a recent Water and Waste meeting. The area that will receive attention is bordered by Giffin Road in the north and Fretwell Road in the south. It includes a number of rural residential blocks (that have development approvals), as well as the Leichhardt Soccer Club and new aged care development on the corner of Progress Road and Fretwell Road.

Announcing the funding, Cr. Rob Pyne said, “With the change from rural-residential to a Residential 2 area, as allowed under CairnsPlan, sewerage has to happen. It has been coming for some time, but it took time to secure the signatures of all the land owners.”

Cr. Pyne said, “That land is full of natural springs, so as we enter the dry season, we can look at doing the work. It is a real relief to now have all the signatures needed from the land owners and a budget allocation that allows the work to be done. I expect many of the effected property owners will also be relieved.”

UNIT OWNERS CALL FOR FAIRNESS

Owners of strata-titled units have called for Cairns Regional Council to change the way it levies rates, so they are treated on the same basis as owners of the traditional, but fast disappearing quarter acre block.

Most unit-owners pay the minimum rate, which is currently $760.00. Currently this is the minimum rate for both units and residential properties. However, unit owners who are paying above the minimum rate find themselves paying a higher rate in the dollar than owners of houses.

Past years have seen former Douglas Shire rating categories brought into line with those of the former Cairns City Council to create a unified rating system. It may now be time to draw some of the categories together, so that there is greater equity in the system.

Bringing the Pavement Alive: The Chalk Guy Has More!

Council should pay to bring this guy to Cairns. Maybe as part of Festival Cairns?

ST GERARD MAJELLA SCHOOL ZONE

Where school parking is located within the school grounds, it becomes the schools problem, in terms of maintenance and associated issues. However, where parking is located on a public road, it is a joint problem between the school and Council, with Queensland Transport also having a role with crossings and employment of crossing supervisors.

In response to problems at St. Gerard Majella, Council has approved new line making, to clarify issue and improve safety. However, it only takes one person incorrectly using the Stop, Drop and Go to clog things up, so hopefully all will be responsible.

There is a need (at all schools) to get more students using the school bus and walking or cycling to school. However, the car will always be used by many, so please show patience, as at the end of the day it is only an issue for 15 – 20 minutes.
