MARTI STREET SHOPS APPROVED

From May 2010: Cairns Regional Council has approved a request for an extension of the Shopping Facilities in Marti Street and Toogood Road in Bayview Heights. The approval will see a change in the intensity of the site that allows an extension to the southernmost two shop units, extending them 154 square metres to the rear. The extension will be approximately 14 metres in length and 10 metres in width, expanding the existing shopping facilities.

The shops are within a Local Centre Planning Area and the extension was considered to be generally compliant with Council’s Planning Scheme. Currently half of the shopping units are vacant and it was felt the location has not been providing the desired levels of service envisioned for a Local Centre.

The extension to the rear and amalgamation of two units will allow for the introduction of a larger and more diverse shop to the advantage of local residents and to the general occupation of the overall complex of shopping units.

Council acknowledged that the extension to the shops will result in an erosion of an already substandard provision of car parking. However, Council also noted many customers walk or cycle to these neighbourhood shops.

Given the “convenience” nature of the shops in a Local Centre, it was not considered that long term on-street parking would be generated to any more significant extent than presently exists.

Ample parking is available on Marti Street and Toogood Road. This situation can be further improved by line marking for vehicle parking along Toogood Road in addition to Marti Street (which is already line marked).

A requirement of the approval was that long term staff park at the rear, so the on street parking remains available for customer parking.

TRAFALGAR PATHWAY GETS ATTENTION

Cairns Regional Council has done some concreting work on the Mount Sheridan pathway that runs from the Trafalgar Street Park, beside the bank of Skeleton Creek.

The pathway is a lovely walk for locals and offers convenience for pedestrians and cyclists in the Mount Sheridan area.

Cr. Pyne said, “Following a complaint from a resident, an inspection revealed tree roots pushing up the asphalt in places and dirt and mould making the surface slippery when wet. I am confident that these other maintenance issues will soon be completed as well.”

‘BEN WILSON PARK’ DONATION WELCOME

Cairns Regional Council has a program known as Partnership Cairns that allows private citizens to contribute to public facilities.

A good example is the lovely new bench in Ben Wilson Park, kindly donated by Elizabeth Jetsy and Judy Adams. Their contribution is most appreciated.

Residents and businesses can be involved in the project in several ways, such as landscaping and paving, seats and planter boxes, banners and flags, adopting a roundabout to name but a few.

LOCAL SPORTING ACHIEVERS ACKNOWLEDGED

Recently the Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt held the ‘Valuing Volunteers in Sport and Recreation’ Awards as part of National Volunteers Week.

Volunteers from a range of sports from White Rock south to Babinda were presented at Fuller Sports Club in Edmonton. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the community and most sport and recreation clubs would not be able to survive without them.

Mr Pitt said, ”There’s an army of volunteers who generously give of their time and their work can often go unrecognised. They are the coaches, board members, time keepers, officials and first aid officers. Others work behind the scenes to run canteens, coordinate working bees and raise funds for the clubs they love. These people are an inspiration to all of us and highlight the great work being achieved behind the scenes.”

Councillor Paul Gregory said recognition of our volunteers is richly deserved for the amount of time and effort put in by the worthy recipients. He added, “Without their efforts, families would not be able to enjoy the recreational pursuits provided by the clubs these volunteers serve.”

Division 3 Councillor Rob Pyne congratulated his nominated recipients for their contribution to sport in the southern corridor. He paid particular tribute to John and Lyn Bomben (soccer), saying, “People of this calibre come along once in a generation, and we are very lucky to have them.”

Queensland has the highest rate of volunteers in the country. Thirty eight per cent of our population participate in volunteer work. Mr. Pitt thanked all recipients, including Allan Oliver (rugby league) and Gavern Lovett (Mulgrave Cricket Association) for their contributions. Also recognised was Gordonvale Icon Dave Chalk for his contribution to Aussie Rules.

Mr Pitt also made special mention of the contribution of Albert Weare of Edmonton for his contribution to local sport over many years.

There were other recipients from a range of sports who were acknowledged. Just some of these were Deb Stone and Lance Dixon (South Cairns Cutters), Tony Stocker (Leichhardt Lions), Peter Swain (Hockey) and Jaynee Bennetts (Stingrays Swimming Club).

Dillon Close Action Requested – Action Taken!

Cr. Rob Pyne has contacted the Member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt in relation to “at least three properties at the end of Dillon Close in White Rock.” It is believed these have been purchased by the state government in line with the State’s plans for the Bruce Highway Upgrade, as these lots will be on the eastern end of the overpass from White Rock into Mount Sheridan.

Unfortunately, in the time since these properties have been vacant, there have been a number of problems, not just the run down state of the properties, including fights and vandalism. A couple of pictures are attached.

Cr. Pyne said, “As the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) overpass from White Rock to Mount Sheridan is many years away, we cannot leave these properties in this condition.” He added, “I have asked Mr. Pitt to approach the relevant State Minister for DTMR and ask them to ‘clear these properties’ to ‘open up the area’, as this would be consistent with Council’s policy of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design.
