Stick out your pinky finger and join Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea
The below Media Release arrived from the Member for Mulgrave, Mr. Curtis Pitt. We thank him for his support of this positive community initiative.
Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt will this week support the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser.
Mr Pitt said Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea was an annual initiative that highlighted cancer prevention and raised funds for cancer research. “According to the Cancer Council, over $70 million has been raised since Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea began in 1994,” Mr Pitt said.
“With one in three Queensland women and one in two Queensland men likely to develop cancer in their lifetime, it’s a topic that is close to the heart of many. I’ll be attending three events on the southside and encourage people to join in and make a donation. Just call in to Bak Park at White Rock from 9am or from 10am Mount Sheridan Plaza or St Johns Young Lifestyle Care at Highleigh Road Gordonvale.”
Mr Pitt said the Cancer Council indicated breast cancer for females and prostate cancer for males are bthe most commonly diagnosed cancers in Queensland. “For women, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is a timely reminder to ring 13 20 50 and make an appointment with BreastScreen Queensland,” Mr Pitt said.
“All women aged between 50 and 69 are strongly encouraged to have a free breastscreen every two years, as 75 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50. For men, this national awareness day is a great opportunity to highlight cancer prevention.
“It is common for men over 50 to have symptoms related to urinary flow, urgency and control and in most cases these symptoms will not be prostate cancer but they should be checked by a general practitioner.
“Men with a family history of prostate cancer have a greater risk of the disease so they should talk to their doctor about testing – early diagnosis is the key to enabling better outcomes and potential cure.”
