New lighting has been installed in the Woree Sporting Precinct, following funding of $178,298 from the State Government. FNQ Football received the funding from the Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation for their capital works proposal for the lighting of two shared use ovals.
FNQ Football were proud to open their training complex (in Woree State High School area) last month. These fields will be the base for the FNQ Centre of Excellence and Development Squad programs. These 2 programs present a pathway for boys and girls aged from 12-17 living within the areas of Cairns, Johnstone River, Tablelands and Weipa who wish to represent their Zone and Football Queensland and potentially play soccer for Queensland and possibly Australia.
Phil Reeves, the Minister for Child Safety and Minister for Sport officially opened the Regional Training complex. He said, “Cairns locals love their sport, and we want to encourage them to get involved in sport and recreation by providing new and improved facilities.
“By continuing to fund significant sport and recreation facilities throughout Queensland, we’re making it easier for people to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.”
MP Desley Boyle said, “Ultimately, this will help local organisations develop and will help increase their membership numbers.
I would also like to thank Chris Collins from FNQ Soccer for making the application. It is only when local groups have a go that we are able to get some wins for the community.”
Council is also doing its part to make the Woree Sporting Precinct a world class set-up. Council has upgraded the asphalt in the car park and installed new lighting in the car park at a total cost of almost $40 000.00. The Council lighting really improves safety in the pool car park area, which is important, as that is access to the fields as well.
Cr. Rob Pyne applauded all the stakeholders for their efforts, “This area is much tidier now, it is safer and we are even on top of the graffiti problem. I would like to thank Council staff, the Woree school and the YMCA, who manage the pool.”
Member for Cairns Desley Boyle announced South Cairns is set to benefit from $178,298 in Bligh Government funding as part of the Sport and Recreation Infrastructure program. She said, “The FNQ Soccer Zone Inc will receive the funding to install lighting to support football and rugby union at Woree State High School,”
Ms Boyle said. “Local sporting clubs are the lifeblood of the community, This infrastructure funding is a win-win situation for Cairns as it will create jobs and provide locals with the infrastructure they need to get up, get out and get active.”
“Cairns locals love their sport, and we want to encourage them to get involved in sport and recreation by providing new and improved facilities. “Ultimately, this will help local organisations develop and thrive, and will help increase their membership numbers.”
Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the Bligh Government is committed to developing more opportunities for Queenslanders to get active. “Under our Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland initiative, we want to help Queenslanders become Australia’s healthiest people by reducing obesity levels by one third by 2020,”
Mr Reeves said. “This Sport and Recreation Infrastructure funding will help us work towards this goal.
“By continuing to fund significant sport and recreation facilities throughout Queensland, we’re making it easier for people to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
“We’ve made the tough economic decisions to ensure we can continue to support local sport and recreation.
“Because of the strong leadership of the Bligh Government we are able to invest more in sport and recreation than any other state in the country.”
Local Councillor Rob Pyne supported the application and welcomed the funding.
Cairns Regional Council took a more positive approach to the proposed Edmonton Business & Industry Park at the last Council meeting, held in Babinda. Council agreed to in principle, support for the general proposal in its current form including the proposed staging of the development.
The Edmonton Business & Industry Park (EBIP) is a masterplanned employment area of 212 hectares, with the potential to generate approximately 4,000 jobs to meet the future business and employment demands of Cairns’ growing Southern Corridor.
A greenfield site, it offers a unique opportunity to masterplan a business and industry development that will meet the needs of Cairns’ current and emerging industry sectors.
The development will also include extensive community and recreational facilities including two district level sports fields and one district level informal park area, picnic areas, cycle paths and walking trails.
The Edmonton Business and Industry Park is being developed by Pregno Family Investments (PFI) – a Cairns based company, with considerable local knowledge. It is believed to have been a source of frustration to the proponents that the project has been delayed while waiting for State and Council approvals.
Cr. Rob Pyne applauded council’s decision. He said, “I have supported this from Day 1. It has been a cause of great frustration that this has been held up, especially during a period of high unemployment, the very time at which we need projects like this to drive employment growth.”
A council spokesperson said, “As the Mount Peter Master Plan has progressed and the objectives for the Mount Peter area confirm that property south of Blackfellow Creek, and east of the highway, is intended to be developed for employment purposes such as low impact industrial, transport-based industries, business/technology park and complementary mixed uses.”
The land between Swallow Road and Blackfellow Creek could see work as soon as the beginning of the next dry season. Together with the Edmonton Town Centre this development could help shape the economy and geography of South Cairns!
Murder Ballads was fantastic last night as part of Cairns Festival. Some pictures are below for your enjoyment.
This special Cairns Festival cabaret style show, featuring Roz Pappalardo and the Wayward Gentlemen, Lucy Star Satellite, The McMenamins and Jeremiah Johnson at the Center of Contemporary Arts. Firmly etched in the Brisbane musical
landscape, Murder Ballads shows have bought together lovers of the dark side, always featuring a stellar line-up of artists, locally and statewide, and some fabulously dark visuals. Each act will perform a selection of their favourite crime ballads from past and present, alongside their own original songs inspired by the dark side of humanity and its more nefarious nature.

The upgrade of the Dillon Street drain in White Rock has sparked anger from some residents, who have raised environmental concerns. The drain runs parallel to Tiffany Street (at the end of Alabama and Denver Streets).
Council work is aimed at preventing flooding in heavy rain by allowing water to flow away quickly.
The work includes the installation of a new concrete lined drainage channel which will greatly improve the capacity of the drain and minimise flooding in the future.
Cr. Rob Pyne said, “I have received some phone calls from residents regarding the upgrade of the Dillon Street Drain”
“It is a million dollar investment in needed infrastructure. One thing we have learned from the Brisbane floods is just because an area has not flooded in the last 10, 20 or even 30 years, does not mean it is a sure thing. This work will guarantee flood immunity.”
Cr. Pyne said, “There has been a lot of earthwork in that area recently, and I would rather cop criticism now while this work is being done, than be back there next wet season, apologising to people because their houses are being flooded.”
Cairns Regional Council appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents during these necessary improvement works and apologises for any inconvenience caused.
The below pictures show the drain almost busting its banks last wet season:
*Update – This job was finished by the end of October.
