Pacific Communities Festival a Great Day!

FOGARTY Park came alive with song, dance and food last month at the Pacific Communities Festival on the Cairns Esplanade.

This year, the festival, which has become an annual event, coincided with Peace Week.

Pacific Communities Council, which will have a specific focus on representing islanders living in Far North Queensland.

South Cairns is always well represented at this great cultural celebration!

Groups from Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands all took part in the festival, which had a specific focus on bringing together the youth and celebrating their cultural heritage.

Young performers took part in singing, traditional dance and fire twirling with live music and free islander food entertaining the huge crowd.

The performers were so full of pride and these events that build confidence and self-respect in our young people are so important.

Book Writers Expo 2011 Showcasing our Talent!

The Cairns Book Creators Circle held their 2011 Book Expo at Rydges Tradewinds last month. The event was held during Peace Week, to commemorate the contribution many writers make to peace.

One chair at the event was left vacant to acknowledge journalists and writers who are imprisoned for writing about injustice in countries that do not tolerate freedom of speech.

Guests included Laura Milligan daughter of the legendary Spike Milligan. Laura spoke about her father and writing her own first book.

The best selling author Dr. Lindsay Simpson spoke about her latest work Honeymoon Dive which dramatically retells the case of American tourist Gabe Watson (who has been charged with murder) and his new wife Tina, who drowned diving on the Great Barrier Reef.

The number of Cairns authors now published and selling their work in Australia and internationally would surprise many locals. Events like this help local writers showcase their work and promote their talents.

People wanting to see some of the wonderful literary work coming from our region can Google Cairns Book Creators Circle or go to their website at:
