New Basketball Courts and Tennis Courts for White Rock!

Member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt, has joined Local Councillor Rob Pyne, in an effort to ensure White Rock residents are not disadvantaged by the loss of Bak Park which has been earmarked for compulsory acquisition by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Mr Pitt wrote to Minister for Main Roads, Craig Wallace, to highlight the strong sense of community ownership of the park and expressed his concern that the residents would lose a valuable community resource.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has a requirement for the property and to pay compensation. Mr. Pitt said, “Although small in size, Bak Park has played a big part in the lives of many local residents and has long been a focal point for recreational activity for young people in the area – particularly those who play tennis and basketball.”

Mr. Pitt said, “When the property is acquired for the highway upgrade,  the Council would be entitled to compensation from the State Government to relocate the facilities to a new location for the benefit of the local community.”

Mr. Pitt concluded, “Compensation would be paid to the Council, however it would be Council’s responsibility to decide how that compensation is used. White Rock residents need an assurance that facilities will be replaced like-for-like or to a better standard in their local area, and not moved elsewhere.”

Councillor Rob Pyne has called on Mayor Val Schier and Council Officers to commit to move the facilities to Khalu Park and Reys Park in White Rock. He said, “Curtis and I agree that Khalu Park, named in honour of the respected local family would be a suitable location to receive attention from any state-funded upgrade.”

Cr Pyne said, “Public consultation would then need to be undertaken with local residents to seek their views on providing new courts at Reys Park or Khalu Park.”

In conclusion, Cr. Pyne said, “I want a commitment from the Mayor on this. Once we have that, I believe the state government may even consider funding the new courts prior to the resumption of Bak Park.”

Walk to White Rock Peak Promoted as Great Opportunity!

A proposal to improve and promote a walk to White Rock Peak, has been described as a great cultural tourism and recreational opportunity. The walk would allow tourists and locals alike to walk from suburban Mount Sheridan up to the iconic landmark and on to Copperlode Dam!

Cr. Rob Pyne said, “Rarely do you have opportunities like this, which offer so much benefit for little cost. It is an opportunity that promotes environmental awareness .”

Indigenous Elder, Seith Fourmile said, “The White Rock is referred to as Bunda Mundii Juna by local indigenous leaders, which translates as “mountain skinned elbow”, Bunda (Mountain) Mundii Gunjii (Skinned Elbow). The walk sounds like a great idea.”

Cr. Pyne says, “This proposal could create indigenous employment, environmental awareness and help improve health and fitness. As far as I can see there is no down side!”

Local Tourism figure Brian Strike said the walk  could provide a tourist opportunity and represent a valuable recreational outlet for locals. He said,”I wouldn’t be walking from the base up to the top, that is a young man’s game, but a walk to the peak from Lake Morris Road is much easier and you still get the great views.”

Cr. Pyne concluded, “We know we have a problem in this Country with obesity.  We also know many people are looking for recreational opportunities, just like this.

We need to get our children out of the house doing things, like we did when we were kids. There are a lot of sporting groups in the southern corridor, but for those who don’t take to organised sport this could be just the ticket!”

Services Directory launched: Needs local input from groups and agencies!

An online directory that will help people to locate everything from the local doctor’s surgery to employment services or sporting groups was launched by Cairns Regional Council in 2012.

The Community Services Directory featured on Council’s website as a resource to assist both residents and visitors in accessing services and organisations operating within the region.

“But the first, very important step is to encourage these organisations to submit their details so we can build up a comprehensive database for community use,” Cr. Rob Pyne said.

“Inclusion on the database is free, and we would like to see this resource become a one-stop shop for anyone looking for service providers in the local area.

“It includes support groups, sporting clubs, schools, training providers and much more.”

The directory is already available for use via a link on the home page of Council’s website. This link can also be used to upload information.

Mayor Val Schier who will launched the Directory said, “If you provide a service to the community, you are invited to add your organisation’s details via a simple form that can be lodged online.”

‘The True Spirit of Cyclone Yasi’ book launch and SES Fundraiser at the Cairns Golf Club!

From: Lisa Robbie:

The SES is a volunteer organisation that exists to help our local communities in times of emergency and disaster.  SES volunteers care about their communities and are not paid for the great work that they do, furthermore, they do much of their own fundraising to keep their volunteer service running.

Each year the SES receives thousands of calls for assistance.  One day it might be you.  Please come along and show your support for these SES volunteers who provide such a valuable and important service for us all.

All it will take is $15 & 2 hours out of your Friday evening to come along, enjoy a welcome drink and cocktail nibbles while you look over the beautiful golf course, hear from our own Mayor Val Schier, and ABC Far North’s Fiona Sewell and Phil Staley who went above and beyond to bring us the stories from the Yasi affected community.

The Official Launch of the book, “The True Spirit of Cyclone Yasi” will complement the night.  Meet the six local Cairns contributors, the book’s creator Bernadette Lawson and many of the SES volunteers who gave their time to help those families affected by Yasi.

Bernadette created this beautiful 192 page full colour book to inspire people with ways they can help in the event of disaster, and to assist the healing in those who are still coming to terms with their loss and grief in the wake of Yasi.

Books are $30 and 10% is donated directly back to families who are still struggling one year on.
