BEING CYCLONE AWARE
With predictions for a hotter and wetter than normal wet season, Cairns Regional Council is sending a message to householders to prepare an emergency plan and stay informed.
Being prepared is the key to your safety.
Cr. Rob Pyne encouraged all residents to:
- Make sure they have updated their phone details so they can receive disaster warnings.
- Be aware of their local emergency contacts and information sources.
- Know if they are in a flood evacuation area and determine if and when they may need to evacuate.
- Understand anything else they may need to do to plan for a natural disaster.
Council plays a lead role in Local Disaster Management and is central to all efforts should a cyclone hit. However, everyone must be prepared and have a plan that includes every member of their household.
Historically in the average cyclone season, four major cyclonic storms occur. For this year, BOM has predicted at least six. During the cyclone season it is necessary that the community as a whole be in a state of alert and be well prepared.
We have also posted an excellent video about preparing Far Northern Homes for Cyclones and Climate Change!

I would encourage everyone to get behind their local neighborhood watch organisation. Community based programs such as these bring the community closer in a society that relies so heavily on technology and social media. It seems we no longer know who our neighbors are, or what they do. If you approach your neighbors these days for a cup of sugar they look at you as if you are crazy! Let’s get back to the core of the community and meet the people who live just next door.
