Cairns Entertainment Precinct: Fully Funded and work to be completed by 2015.

Stage 1 will deliver a $154.6 million world-class performing arts centre and community space including –

  • 1100-seat theatre, studio and rehearsal space.
  • Public plaza
  • Covered pedestrian bridge connecting the Convention Centre to the new Precinct
  • The refurbishment of White’s Shed.
  • Car parking.

The Federal Government has committed $40 million to project, the Queensland Government has promised $57.3 million with the Cairns Regional Council to make up the balance.

The land on Trinity Inlet will be leased to council by the State Government at nominal cost.

Current Activity

The Cairns Entertainment Precinct Project Team is currently finalising Grant Funding Agreements to allow Council to access the State and Federal Government funds.

The architectural team is now starting work on the detailed designs.

Expressions of interest will be sought early in 2012 from contractors who will be involved early in the detailed design process.

World Class

The new Entertainment Precinct will be a world class entertainment venue with the latest in lighting, sound and audiovisual capabilities.

It will be capable of seating 1100 people inside the theatre and hundreds of people will be able to enjoy an outdoor entertainment area under a cover inspired by tropical rainforest.

Trinity Inlet

The Precinct has been designed to complement its location and other development along the banks of Trinity Inlet.

The Ports North redevelopment of Shed 2 and other works will form the northern approach to the Precinct while a covered walkway west from the Precinct will link to the Convention Centre.

The Precinct is being developed to have no impact on Port operations.

Impact on rates

There has been a lot of discussion in the media over recent weeks about the effect the project will have on rates. The reality is that there in no rate rise directly linked to the project in the same way that there is no rates figure directly linked to the Lagoon Pool or any other council project.

Council will decide how to manage rates based on a wide range of priorities.

When the Precinct is fully operational in the 2015/2016 financial year, the operating costs will amount to approximately 3.4% of Council’s overall annual operating budget. The total Council expenditure on culture, arts and events, including the Precinct, will add up to just 6% of Council’s operating budget.

Cairns Community Service Directory

Do you provide a community service?

Add your service for the community to access

The Online community services directory can be found at http://www.cairnscommunitydirectory.org.au There are several ways you can submit or update your information on the directory. First though – search the directory to see if your service is already listed! If it is, and the details need updating, then at the bottom of your entry you will see the text:- “Help us maintain the directory: Update Service Provider” – this will open up a form with the existing details that you can edit or add too.

If your entry doesn’t yet exist, then you can add it by clicking on the “Add your service” highlighted menu option on the main page, where a form with LOTS of fields is available. This form can be a bit off-putting at first, until you realise that you don’t have to fill in ALL the fields in the form, just as many or as few as needed. The most important fields though, are the contact name, contact phone, and contact e-mail fields at the bottom of either form. THESE fields are NOT displayed in your directory listing, they are used by INFOEXCHANGE (who provide the directory service to council) to be able to contact you, and verify all your details.

Basically – by filling in the form, you don’t directly add your details to the directory listing, instead this information is used by INFOEXCHANGE to verify your entry and prevent SPAM/vandalism/incorrect information being added to the directory, and they will usually contact you back within seven to ten days.

Are you looking for a community service?

Look no further – your new Community Services Directory is here!

Council’s Community Services Directory is a database that provides information about community services, organisations, groups and events in your local area.

Information on this site has been given by the service providers themselves with a brief summary of their services as well as their contact details.
