Curtis Pitt Announces Investment in Edmonton Tennis!

Tennis players in Edmonton will benefit from $65,558 in Bligh Government funding as part of the $20 million Sport and Recreation Infrastructure program, State Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt announced today.

Mr Pitt said the improvement involves upgrading three court surfaces to a rebound synpave hard court coating and putting concrete at the ends of the three courts and in front of the clubhouse where there is wear and tear from constant use and the weather elements.

“The net posts will also be replaced with safer ones without large exposed handles,” Mr Pitt said.

“This is great news for the club and community and I’m sure the new upgraded courts will be greatly appreciated by the club’s 143 members.”

Mr Pitt said the club’s committee has worked hard over recent years to fundraise towards upgrading the courts. ”There have been so many tireless workers who’ve taken every opportunity to raise funds through membership drives, ‘come and try days’ and sausage sizzles,” he said.

Mr Pitt said the current condition of the courts meant that competition fixtures are unable to be played at Down Park and players are forced to travel to other clubs for matches.

“Since 2007, the number of memberships has increased from 20 children playing twice a week and a social group playing once a week, to 120 children using the courts five days a week. This large increase has brought the need of upgrading facilities to a high priority,” he said.

“As a government, we want to make sure our local sport and recreation clubs have the best facilities so they can continue to provide that vital community service.

“This infrastructure funding is a win-win situation as it will create jobs and provide locals with the infrastructure they need to get up, get out and get active.

“Far northerners love their sport, and we want to encourage them to get involved in sport and recreation by providing new and improved facilities.

“Ultimately, this will help local organisations develop and thrive, and will help increase their membership numbers.”

Mr Pitt said the latest Bligh Government funding for sport and recreation compliments other funding initiatives including the Positive or it’s Pointless campaign, the Sport and Recreation Local Jobs Plan, and the Sport and Recreation Active Inclusion program.

“Developing sport at the grassroots right up to the elite level heightens our chances of hosting events, and reinforces our reputation as the Champions State and the Events State as well.

“This is underpinned by our Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland initiative to help Queenslanders become the healthiest people in Australia.”

A brand new all-abilities playground has increased outdoor recreation opportunities for children in South Cairns.

Located at Sugarworld Gardens in Edmonton, the playgrounds offer fun, safe and varied activities that can be enjoyed by children of all abilities.

Cairns Regional Council has partnered the Queensland Government in establishing the playgrounds.

“We welcome the Queensland Government’s commitment to providing safe play areas for all children,” Mayor Val Schier said.

“They feature accessible structures that promote participation and allow children of all abilities to play together.”

The Sugarworld All Abilities Playground (Hambledon Drive, Edmonton) was officially opened by Disabilities Minister Curtis Pitt yesterday, with a sausage sizzle and giveaways from 9am to 11am.

Among the play equipment are an accessible swing set, a bird’s nest swing, a bamboo maze and a sensory space with outdoor musical instruments.

The playground includes a double flying fox, a wheelchair-accessible carousel, bamboo maze and outdoor musical instruments.

A playground was also opened in Mossman to the joy of Cr. Julia Leu, “I pass that playground every day and it is already well-loved and used extensively” she said.

“This is something we have been working towards for a long time and I want to congratulate all staff who have been involved in such a successful project.”

The two playgrounds are among 16 being installed throughout the State and are jointly funded by Cairns Regional Council and the Queensland Government.

RE: Letter to the Editor

Dear Sir,

It is concerning to hear that some within the LNP are calling to go back to public consultation regarding the proposed Bruce Highway Upgrade. The political games played with this issue have been distasteful in the extreme, including stories of some prominent properties being resumed, when this was clearly not the intention of the state.

Get involved: Mulgrave MP Curtis Pitt and Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace look over plans for the highway upgrade.

Of the small number of people who are having their property resumed, most have been treated fairly. Those who have been left in limbo are small in number and it is hoped they will not be further disadvantaged by any ongoing delays regarding this project.

I had hoped this issue was now beyond politics and all stakeholders were committed to the project moving ahead. Even Warren Entsch has now accepted the public benefit in proceeding, at least in regards to stage one.

The state government is not without blame on this issue. Here we are in 2011, after a decade of studying this relatively short 14 kilometres of road, still waiting for construction to commence. The population growth in our southern suburbs can hardly have come as a surprise to those in government.

It could be people have been misquoted or perhaps they have simply confused their C words, but your readers on the Southside can certainly testify that what is needed now is not Consultation, but Construction!

Regards,

Rob Pyne

LOCAL SPORTING ACHIEVERS ACKNOWLEDGED

Recently the Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt held the ‘Valuing Volunteers in Sport and Recreation’ Awards as part of National Volunteers Week.

Volunteers from a range of sports from White Rock south to Babinda were presented at Fuller Sports Club in Edmonton. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the community and most sport and recreation clubs would not be able to survive without them.

Mr Pitt said, ”There’s an army of volunteers who generously give of their time and their work can often go unrecognised. They are the coaches, board members, time keepers, officials and first aid officers. Others work behind the scenes to run canteens, coordinate working bees and raise funds for the clubs they love. These people are an inspiration to all of us and highlight the great work being achieved behind the scenes.”

Councillor Paul Gregory said recognition of our volunteers is richly deserved for the amount of time and effort put in by the worthy recipients. He added, “Without their efforts, families would not be able to enjoy the recreational pursuits provided by the clubs these volunteers serve.”

Division 3 Councillor Rob Pyne congratulated his nominated recipients for their contribution to sport in the southern corridor. He paid particular tribute to John and Lyn Bomben (soccer), saying, “People of this calibre come along once in a generation, and we are very lucky to have them.”

Queensland has the highest rate of volunteers in the country. Thirty eight per cent of our population participate in volunteer work. Mr. Pitt thanked all recipients, including Allan Oliver (rugby league) and Gavern Lovett (Mulgrave Cricket Association) for their contributions. Also recognised was Gordonvale Icon Dave Chalk for his contribution to Aussie Rules.

Mr Pitt also made special mention of the contribution of Albert Weare of Edmonton for his contribution to local sport over many years.

There were other recipients from a range of sports who were acknowledged. Just some of these were Deb Stone and Lance Dixon (South Cairns Cutters), Tony Stocker (Leichhardt Lions), Peter Swain (Hockey) and Jaynee Bennetts (Stingrays Swimming Club).
