Cruisin’: An exciting new musical from St Marys

An exciting new musical filled with comedy, pathos and catchy musical numbers in the style and spirit of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll.

It tells a vibrant, energetic and engaging musical story that follows Vinnie Russo, a young Italian kid as he struggles to escape from his papa’s expectations, to take his place in the 1950′s world of motorbikes, rock ‘n’ roll and girls.

Woree Kids Encouraged to “TravelSmart” to School.

Source: Woree State School ‘Tuesday News’

This year, along with many other schools in Queensland, Woree State School will be actively encouraging students to walk or ride to school. If they have to come by car, we will be actively promoting that they get dropped off down the road so they can at least walk part of the way to school.

What is TravelSmart?

The TravelSmart Schools Project is a fun, hands on initiative encouraging students to use their imagination and think of new ways to Travel Smart to and from school.

The aim of TravelSmart Schools is to:

  • increase road safety around schools by reducing traffic congestion and illegal parking
  • reduce school-related vehicle kilometres travelled, greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution and improve air quality
  • motivate students to increase their levels of physical activity so they arrive to school more alert
  • encourage students to develop lifelong travel behavioural habits
  • engage and influence the whole school community.

We will be undertaking various activities throughout the year including participating in the National Walk Safely to School Day and the National Ride to School Day. We will also have some Park, Walk and Ride Days. In conjunction with some of these activities we will also be providing a Healthy Breakfast. Our first big activity will be participating in Bike Week from 12- 16 March.

We will be running Bike Buses along selected routes to and from school for the week. Teachers will be at the starting points on their bikes at 8:05am. From there they will follow a designated route to school and students on their bikes can join them along the way. If you wish to accompany your child on these routes you are most welcome. The Bike Buses will also operate for the return trip home in the afternoon. They will leave school about 3:05pm.

Your child must wear an appropriate bicycle helmet and we have a secure lock up facility here so the student’s bikes are safe during the school day. The more students riding and walking to school means fewer cars and a much safer environment around the school. The map below shows the Bike Bus routes – they will operate every day between 12 – 16 March.

There seems to be a bit of confusion as to what the Rigg Street Ray Jones Drive Intersection will look like  after the highway upgrade.

Lesina and YEA and Darren Hunt and Australia Folks help out in Calanna Park

It is a good day to reflect that politicians are not bad people.

Thanks to Kirsten Lesina and Darren Hunt for helping with a project involving painting a shed in Calanna Park. Rob had complained of graffiti and sought help of his Council colleague (Kirsten) and his cousin (Darren) to have it removed.

Members of the Cairns YEA had paintbrushes in hand to clean up a graffiti hotspot.

Cairns YEA! is a youth-based initiative of Cairns Regional Council, encouraging the participation of young people in civic activities and providing an outlet to voice their ideas and opinions.

Members painted a graffiti-covered Brothers Hockey Club shed at Calanna Park, Woree. The shed has been painted a dark blue – coinciding with the team colours – in the hope of reducing vandalism.

Cr Kirsten Lesina, chair of Cairns YEA!, said members were good role models for their peers in starting this piece of work.

Unfortunately, school commitments took them away and in jumped Darren Hunt, Damian Byrnes and the Australia Party, with the help of their Junior CrimeStoppers.

Darren, Damian and their junior CrimeStoppers (pictured below) did most of the work and we are glad they finished the job, as we don’t have Gavin King’s phone number!

Thank you to all involved. We are happy to support anyone who supports South Cairns!

The finished work looks great, we are sure you will agree!
